Geography
Concordia Parish sits on the alluvial floodplain of the Mississippi River, in the Louisiana Delta directly across the river from Natchez, Mississippi. History
Concordia Parish was established in 1807, one of Louisiana’s original parishes. Its name comes from the Latin word for “harmony,” reportedly borrowed from a Natchez-area plantation called Concord. Before the Civil War the parish’s plantation economy relied overwhelmingly on enslaved labor; by 1860 enslaved people made up roughly 91 percent of the parish’s population, among the highest shares recorded in any Louisiana parish. Vidalia was later chosen as parish seat for its riverfront position opposite Natchez.
