Geography
Miller County occupies Arkansas’s southwest corner, where the Red River forms much of the southern boundary with Louisiana before the county narrows to a point at the Texas line. The terrain is mostly flat to gently rolling coastal-plain land, with bottomland along the Red River and Sulphur River drainages and pine-hardwood upland further north. Cut-off lakes and oxbows left by the Red River’s shifting channel, including Clear Lake, dot the southern part of the county.
Little River County borders Miller County to the north; Hempstead County lies to the northeast and Lafayette County to the east. Bossier Parish, Louisiana, is southeast and Caddo Parish, Louisiana, is to the south. Across the state line to the west are Cass County, Texas, and Bowie County, Texas. Texarkana itself straddles the Arkansas–Texas line, with this page covering only the Arkansas side.

History
Miller County was created on April 1, 1820, as Arkansas Territory’s sixth county, named for James Miller, the territory’s first governor. Its original boundaries reached far into present-day Texas; that claim was extinguished when Texas joined the Union in 1845 and the Red River boundary was fixed. The county itself was abolished in 1838 amid the border dispute and not re-formed until December 22, 1874, during Reconstruction, carved from part of Lafayette County. Texarkana grew up straddling the new Arkansas–Texas state line after the railroad arrived in 1873, and has anchored the county ever since.
