Geography
The district lies in the south-west of the Western North Region, in forest country of gentle hills and many small streams. Rainfall is high and falls in two seasons, and forest reserves cover part of the land. Settlement is dispersed: most of the communities on the list are farm villages of a few hundred people rather than towns. Sefwi Akontobra adjoins Sefwi-Wiawso to the east, Aowin to the south-west and Juaboso to the north.
Economy and Local Life
Farming employs most people, with cocoa the main cash crop and oil palm second. Plantain, cocoyam, cassava, maize and vegetables are grown for the household and sold at the periodic markets. Timber is cut in the forest areas and processed at small mills. Akontombra holds the district assembly, the main market and the health facilities, and traders from the smaller villages travel in on market days. The 2021 census recorded fewer people than 2010, a change linked to the redrawing of district boundaries in this part of the region.
Getting There
Akontombra is reached by road from Sefwi Wiawso, the regional capital, on the route that continues south-west towards Enchi. From Kumasi, travel through Bibiani and Sefwi Wiawso. Feeder roads to the outlying villages are untarred and difficult in the wet season.
