Geography
Juaboso lies in the north-west of the Western North Region and is the gateway to the Bia districts beyond it. The terrain is forested and undulating, drained by the Bia and Sui rivers, with rainfall high enough to support cocoa without irrigation. Part of the Bia protected forest block falls on the district’s northern side. Juaboso adjoins Bia West and Bia East to the north, and Bodi to the south-east.
Economy and Local Life
Cocoa farming supports most households, and the district is part of the corridor that makes Western North the country’s leading cocoa region. Buying stations open in the villages during the main crop from October. Food farming, mainly plantain, cocoyam, cassava, maize and vegetables, is grown alongside the cocoa and sold in Juaboso market, the largest in the district. Timber extraction and sawmilling are long-standing local trades, and several settlements on the list began as logging camps. Trading across the nearby international border adds to the market traffic.
Getting There
Juaboso is reached by road from Sefwi Wiawso, the regional capital, running north-west through Bodi. From Kumasi the usual route is through Bibiani and Sefwi Wiawso, taking most of half a day. Trotros link Juaboso with Essam-Debiso, Adabokrom and the surrounding villages.
