Geography
Bia East was carved out of the old Bia district in 2012 and covers its eastern half. It lies in the north-west of the Western North Region, in forest country drained by the Bia River and its tributaries, with high rainfall and no dry season long enough to interrupt farming for long. Much of the district’s land is under forest reserve. It adjoins Bia West and Juaboso within the region.
Economy and Local Life
Cocoa is the main source of cash income, and the population growth recorded between the two censuses reflects the steady arrival of farming families from other parts of Ghana. Plantain, cocoyam, cassava and maize are grown for food and for sale in the district’s markets. Timber is worked in the surrounding forest, and several communities on the list below, including the bungalow and camp settlements, began as company quarters. Adabokrom holds the district assembly, the main market and the health centre serving the surrounding villages.
Getting There
Adabokrom is reached by road from Juaboso, which in turn connects to Sefwi Wiawso and on to Kumasi through Bibiani. It is one of the more remote district capitals in the region, and the last stretch is untarred and slow after heavy rain.
