Geography
Nkwanta South lies in the north-east of the Oti Region, along the border with Togo. The landscape is hilly, part of the range that continues into Togo, and several communities sit on high ground; Shiare, home of the Akyode, is among the best known. Streams drain west towards the Oti River. The municipality borders Nkwanta North and Krachi Nchumuru.
Rainfall is single-season here, running roughly April to October, and the dry months are marked by harmattan. The hills give way to broad farming plains in the west. Nkwanta town sits at the meeting of roads from the south, the north and the Togo frontier, which is why it grew into the largest settlement in the area.
Economy and Local Life
Yam is the signature crop, and Nkwanta is a recognised yam market that draws buyers from Accra and Kumasi. Farmers also grow maize, cassava, groundnut, rice and cashew, and keep cattle, sheep and goats. Brewaniase and Dadiasi sit on the road that carries most freight through the area. Trade with Togo across the nearby border is part of daily life. Adele, Akyode, Konkomba and Twi are all heard in the municipal market.
Nkwanta hosts the municipal assembly, a hospital and secondary schools, and its lorry park is busy through the yam season. Buyers arrive from the southern cities and load directly from farm-gate collection points. Livestock markets run alongside the produce trade. Away from the town, most families farm and supplement income with charcoal, shea nuts and dry-season gardening near streams.
Getting There
Nkwanta is on the trunk road running north from Hohoe through Jasikan and Kadjebi, and it links onward to Bimbilla and Yendi in the north. From Accra the trip is a long day by bus through Ho and Hohoe. Feeder roads to the hill communities are rough and need high-clearance vehicles.
