Geography
Nkwanta North occupies the far north-east of the Oti Region. It lies inland from the Oti River, on flat to gently undulating guinea savanna with gallery woodland along the watercourses. The Togo border is to the east and the Northern Region begins beyond the district’s northern edge. Nkwanta North borders Nkwanta South, from which it was created, and Krachi Nchumuru to the west. The 2021 count is well above the 2010 figure, which was taken before the district reached its present shape.
Rain falls in a single season from about April to October, and the dry months are hot with harmattan winds. Settlement is dispersed, with compound farms spread across the savanna rather than clustered in large towns. Kpassa is the main built-up centre and the seat of the district assembly, and the directory currently lists only its largest settlements.
Economy and Local Life
This is yam and grain country. Farmers grow yam, maize, sorghum, millet, rice, groundnut and cowpea, and cattle, sheep and goats are kept in most compounds. Kpassa is the district’s market town and a collection point for yam heading to southern buyers; lorries load there through the harvest months. Shea trees are tapped for nuts, and processing shea butter is common work for women’s groups. Konkomba, Adele and Twi are widely spoken.
The farming year sets everything else in motion. Land is cleared before the rains, yam mounds are raised early, and grain harvests come in from about September. Kpassa’s market is at its busiest through the yam season, when lorries load for the southern cities. Between harvests, households burn charcoal, gather shea and firewood, and tend small livestock. Migration south for dry-season work is common.
Getting There
Kpassa lies on the road running north from Nkwanta towards Bimbilla and Yendi. From Accra the route is through Ho, Hohoe and Nkwanta, and from Tamale it is a southward run through Bimbilla. Most feeder roads in the district are earth surfaced and difficult after rain.
