Geography
Krachi West occupies the western side of the Volta Lake within the Oti Region. Kete Krachi stands on a promontory above the water and is a long-established lake port and ferry terminal. The surrounding country is flat savanna cut by inlets of the lake, and the old town site was flooded when the Akosombo dam filled. The district faces Krachi East across the lake and borders Krachi Nchumuru.
The single rainy season runs roughly April to October. Kete Krachi’s position on the water made it a trading post long before the lake existed, and the modern town was rebuilt on higher ground after the reservoir filled in the 1960s. Outlying communities sit along inlets and are served by canoe as much as by road.
Economy and Local Life
Lake fishing is the defining trade. Crews work the Volta from Kete Krachi and the smaller landings, and smoked and salted fish leave for markets in Kumasi and Accra. Farming supplies yam, cassava, maize and groundnut. Kete Krachi holds a large market and functions as the service centre for both banks of the lake, with the ferry moving people, produce and vehicles across to Dambai.
Fishing households work in crews, and women handle smoking and onward sale of the catch. The market at Kete Krachi is the largest for some distance and draws buyers from the Bono East side as well as from across the water. The district assembly, schools and a hospital are based in the capital. Dry-season vegetable plots on the lake margins supplement farm income.
Getting There
Kete Krachi is reached by road from Atebubu and the Bono East side, and by ferry from Dambai on the eastern bank. Travellers from Accra usually route through Kumasi or through Hohoe and the Oti corridor. Roads to outlying villages are unpaved.
