Geography
Nanumba North lies in the south-east of the Northern Region and forms the northern half of the Nanumba traditional area. The land is savanna with more tree cover than districts further north, and streams drain south and east toward the Oti.
The municipality borders Nanumba South to the south, Yendi to the north and Kpandai to the west. Rain falls from about April to October, a slightly longer season than in the far north.
Bimbilla is the largest settlement by a wide margin, and the rest of the municipality is farming villages linked by feeder roads. Higher rainfall and heavier tree cover than the northern districts allow cassava and tree crops that do not grow well around Tamale.
Economy and Local Life
Yam is the mainstay, and Bimbilla is one of the busiest yam trading towns in northern Ghana, with lorries loading for Accra and Kumasi through the harvest season. Maize, cassava, groundnuts, cowpea and rice are also grown.
Cattle, sheep, goats and poultry are kept in most compounds. Bimbilla holds the main market and the assembly offices, along with schools and a hospital serving the wider Nanumba area. Nanuni is the main language.
The yam trade shapes the calendar. Mounds are raised from December, harvest starts in July and runs to December, and lorries queue in Bimbilla through those months. Traders from southern Ghana rent storage in the town, and transport work provides seasonal income.
Getting There
Bimbilla is reached from Tamale by way of Yendi, then south by road. A second route runs east from Salaga through Kpandai. Long-distance vehicles carrying yam use these roads heavily between September and January.
