Geography
Kpandai lies in the south of the Northern Region, west of the Nanumba districts. The Oti arm of Lake Volta lies to the west, and the district’s streams drain toward it. Woodland savanna and farmland cover most of the area.
The district borders Nanumba South to the east and Nanumba North to the north-east, with the Savannah Region across the western boundary. Rain falls from about April to October.
Villages sit on farmland away from the lake margin, which floods and falls with the season. Kpandai town has the assembly offices, market and hospital, and Ekumdipe is the other settlement of size. The district is mixed in origin, with Nawuri, Konkomba, Nanumba and Gonja communities living across it.
Economy and Local Life
Kpandai is yam country. Ekumdipe and Kpandai itself are known loading points for traders taking yam south to Kumasi and Accra. Maize, cassava, groundnuts, cowpea and rice are also grown, and cassava processing is common in the villages.
Fishing on the lake and the Oti supports settlements on the western side. Cattle, goats, sheep and poultry are kept throughout. Nawuri, Konkomba and Nanuni are all spoken, with Twi used in trade.
Harvest between July and December is when the district is busiest. Lorries come up from Kumasi for yam, and fish landed on the lake is smoked and sent the same way. Cassava is processed into gari locally, giving households income outside the yam season.
Getting There
Kpandai is reached by road from Salaga to the north-west and from Bimbilla to the east. From Tamale, most travellers go south to Salaga and then east. The roads are largely unpaved and heavily used by yam lorries in the harvest months.
