Geography
Mamprugu Moagduri occupies the western end of the North East Region, in flat Guinea savanna along the White Volta. Low-lying ground floods in the rainy season, which runs from about May to October. Several communities are cut off by water for weeks at a time. It is the region’s least densely settled district. It borders West Mamprusi to the east, with the Savannah Region to the south and the Upper East and Upper West regions to the north-west. East Mamprusi lies further east again, on the other side of the region.
Yagaba and Kubori are usually named together as the district’s administrative centre. Kunkwa, Nangruma, Kunchalum and Zangbieri are the other larger communities; the rest are small farming settlements, several of them close to the White Volta. Access to the riverine communities is the district’s standing infrastructure problem.
Economy and Local Life
Farming and livestock keeping account for almost all local income. Millet, sorghum, maize, groundnuts, cowpea, soya and rice are the standard crops, with rice and vegetables grown on flood-retreat land near the river. Cattle, sheep, goats and guinea fowl are widely kept, and shea picking is a major dry-season activity for women. Yagaba and Kunkwa hold the district’s main periodic markets; traders from Walewale and Fumbisi come in for grain and animals.
The district is among the poorest in the region by most measures. Seasonal migration south for farm and construction work is common among young men after the harvest. Fishing in the White Volta adds income for riverside communities. Grain storage and transport costs are the recurring constraint on getting produce to market.
Getting There
Yagaba lies west of Walewale, reached on a mostly untarred road that branches off the N10. Allow around two hours from Walewale in the dry season and considerably longer in the rains. There is no direct long-distance service; travellers change at Walewale.
