Geography
Offinso Municipal lies north-west of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, where the forest begins to thin into the forest–savanna transition. Offinso, the municipal capital, is the traditional seat of the Offinso paramountcy and sits on the main road to Techiman. The Offin river system drains the western side of the municipality. It borders Offinso North to the north, Ahafo Ano South to the west, Atwima Nwabiagya to the south and Afigya-Kwabre to the east.
Economy and Local Life
Offinso is one of Ashanti’s vegetable baskets. Tomatoes, pepper, garden eggs and okra are grown for the Kumasi and Accra markets alongside maize, cassava, plantain and yam, and cocoa holds the wetter southern edge. Poultry farming is substantial. The municipality’s markets and lorry parks handle daily produce loading, and trading, transport and food processing employ most non-farming households.
Asante Twi is spoken throughout, and Offinso is the seat of the Offinso paramount stool with its own annual festival cycle. The Offinso area has a long history of receiving migrant farmers from northern Ghana, who work in vegetable and food-crop production, so zongo communities are well established. The town holds the municipal hospital, a college of education and several senior high schools.
Getting There
Offinso town is roughly 30 km from Kumasi on the Kumasi–Techiman highway, about 40 minutes by road. Every bus and trotro heading north from Kumasi towards Techiman, Sunyani or Tamale passes through, so transport is frequent in both directions.
