Geography
Offinso North occupies the far north-west of the Ashanti Region, in the forest–savanna transition zone. The land is flatter and drier than the districts south of it, with open farmland, cashew and teak plots and scattered woodland. Akomadan, also written Akumadan, and Nkenkaasu are the main towns, both on the Kumasi–Techiman road. It borders Offinso to the south, Ejura Sekyedumase to the north-east and Ahafo Ano North to the south-west.
Economy and Local Life
Offinso North is one of Ghana’s best-known tomato growing districts; the Akomadan area supplies traders who truck tomatoes to Kumasi, Accra and beyond, and prices there set the tone for the wider market. Maize, yam, cassava, pepper and garden eggs are also grown in quantity, with cashew spreading on the drier northern land. Irrigated dry-season vegetable farming and produce haulage employ many households.
Asante Twi is the common language, and the district has long taken in migrant farmers and farm labourers from northern Ghana, who work the tomato and vegetable fields. Akomadan and Nkenkaasu hold the health facilities, schools and markets. Tomato prices swing sharply between the glut and the lean season, and post-harvest losses when buyers do not come are a standing complaint among growers.
Getting There
Akomadan lies about 65 km north-west of Kumasi on the Kumasi–Techiman highway, which runs through the district. Buses and trotros heading north from Kumasi towards Techiman, Sunyani or Tamale pass through Akomadan and Nkenkaasu all day, and produce lorries run the same route. Techiman, the next large market town north, is about 45 km further on.
