Geography
Ejisu sits directly east of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, on the Accra highway. The district is moist semi-deciduous forest, gently undulating, drained by the Oda and its tributaries, and much of its western edge has been absorbed into Kumasi’s built-up spread. Bonwire, Besease, Kwaso and Krapa are among its well-known towns. It borders Asokore Mampong to the west, Kwabre to the north, Sekyere East to the north-east and Asante Akim North to the east.
Economy and Local Life
Farming still employs a large share of the district — cocoa, oil palm, plantain, cassava and vegetables — but the highway has pulled in industry, warehousing and commuter housing. Bonwire is the best-known kente weaving town in Ghana and draws steady visitor traffic, and Besease holds a preserved Asante traditional shrine. Ejisu town’s market, lorry park and light industry make it the commercial centre.
Asante Twi is spoken throughout, and the district carries real weight in Asante history as the home of Yaa Asantewaa, who led the 1900 resistance against the British. Bonwire weavers, the Besease shrine and the Yaa Asantewaa museum site give the district a steady stream of school and heritage visitors. Ejisu holds the municipal hospital and several senior high schools.
Getting There
Ejisu is about 20 km east of Kumasi on the N6 Kumasi–Accra highway, 30 minutes or less by road. Every long-distance bus between Kumasi and Accra passes through, and city trotros serve the town continuously. Bonwire and the northern villages are reached on a tarred branch road off the highway.
