Geography
Agona West occupies gently rolling country in the transition between coastal savanna and forest, a short drive north of the sea. Streams feeding the Ayensu River cross the municipality. Agona Swedru sits at the centre, with Nyakrom, Bobikuma and Nkum among the larger surrounding towns. To the south-west, on the coast, lie Mfantsiman and Cape Coast.
Rainfall is lower than in the forest districts further west, and the dry Harmattan is felt here in December and January. Settlement is compact by regional standards: a ring of substantial towns around Swedru, with farm hamlets between them along the roads.
Economy and Local Life
Agona Swedru is first of all a market town. Its market draws traders from across the eastern Central Region and from Accra, dealing in food crops, cloth and manufactured goods, and the town’s transport yards move that trade daily. Farming in the surrounding villages centres on cassava, maize, plantain, citrus, pineapple and oil palm, with small palm-oil processing. Swedru also supports a working commercial strip of banks, workshops and small manufacturers.
Agona Fante is the local speech, and the Agona traditional area holds its Akwambo festival each year. Swedru has long had a mixed population drawn by the market, including traders from northern Ghana and beyond, and it remains one of the busiest inland towns of the region. Schools, a hospital and the municipal offices are all in the town.
Getting There
Agona Swedru lies about 25 km inland from the N1 coastal highway, reached by turning north at Winneba junction. It is roughly 80 km from Accra and about 60 km east of Cape Coast. Trotros run frequently from Accra’s Kaneshie station and from Winneba and Cape Coast.
