Geography
Mfantsiman occupies a strip of the Central Region coast east of Cape Coast, running inland only a short way. The shore is sandy and open, backed by coastal scrub and thicket, with lagoons behind several of the fishing villages. Rainfall is lower here than in the forest districts inland. Cape Coast lies to the west along the same highway, and inland districts such as Agona West lie to the north-east.
Economy and Local Life
Fishing sets the rhythm of the coastal towns. Canoe fleets work out of Anomabu, Biriwa and Saltpond, and the catch is smoked and traded by women who run the trade end to end. Behind the shore, farmers grow cassava, maize, vegetables and some oil palm. Mankessim holds one of the largest markets in southern Ghana, a wholesale point for produce and fish moving to Accra and Kumasi. Anomabu keeps Fort William, and the old town at Saltpond retains colonial-era trading buildings.
Fante is the everyday language, and the coastal towns keep a strong Asafo company tradition, with company posts and flags still maintained. Mankessim is the historic centre of the Fante states and holds an annual festival that draws people home from Accra and abroad. Salt was worked at Saltpond in earlier times and gave the town its English name.
Getting There
The N1 coastal highway runs the length of the municipality, so access is easy. Saltpond is about 35 km east of Cape Coast and roughly 110 km west of Accra. Mankessim junction, where the Accra road meets the road inland, is the main transport hub; buses and trotros stop there through the day.
