Geography
Tano South lies on the south-eastern side of the Ahafo Region, in the forest zone drained by the Tano River and its tributaries. It borders Tano North to the north, Asutifi South to the west, and the Ahafo Ano districts of the Ashanti Region to the east.
Bechem and Techimantia are the two population centres; the remaining communities are farming villages spread along feeder roads between them. Several names on the list are small hamlets of a few hundred people. Rainfall is bimodal, with the heavier season from March to July and a shorter one from September to November.
Economy and Local Life
Cocoa is the leading cash crop, supported by plantain, cassava, cocoyam, maize and oil palm. Bechem is the district capital and the busiest market town. It sits at the junction where the Goaso road leaves the Sunyani–Kumasi highway, which makes it a collection point for farm produce heading to Kumasi. Techimantia is the second town, with its own market and schools. Sawmilling, transport and small-scale trading employ many households.
The junction position also brings passing trade: fuel, food sellers, mechanics and transport operators cluster along the highway at Bechem. Cocoa purchasing peaks from October to January, and food crops move to Kumasi throughout the year. Schools and health facilities in Bechem and Techimantia serve a wider catchment than the district itself.
Getting There
Bechem is about 25 km south-east of Sunyani on the highway to Kumasi, and roughly 90 minutes from Kumasi itself. It is the turning point for road traffic heading to Hwidiem, Kenyasi and Goaso, so long-distance buses stop there regularly.
Sunyani airport, about 30 km away, is the nearest air link to Accra. Inside the district, the Bechem–Techimantia road is the busiest local route and connects onward towards the Ashanti Region boundary.
