Geography
Tano North occupies the eastern side of the Ahafo Region and takes its name from the Tano River, which runs along the district’s edge. The land is forested and gently hilly, part of the semi-deciduous belt. It borders Tano South to the south and Asutifi North to the west, and the Ashanti Region lies to the east.
Duayaw Nkwanta, Yamfo and Bomaa lie close to the Sunyani–Kumasi corridor, which is why they are the district’s largest settlements. Terchire, Subompang, Susuanso and Adrobaa are smaller farming communities off that road. Being on a tarred national route sets Tano North apart from the more remote western districts of Ahafo.
Economy and Local Life
Cocoa and food farming dominate, with plantain, cassava, cocoyam, maize and vegetables grown for both home use and the Kumasi market. Duayaw Nkwanta is the administrative and market centre, and Yamfo and Bomaa are substantial towns in their own right, with schooling and small-scale trade. Timber, sand winning and transport provide additional work, and small gold operations occur near the district’s western boundary.
Duayaw Nkwanta’s position on a tarred highway makes it easier for farmers here to reach buyers than in the western Ahafo districts. That access supports vegetable and plantain sales to Kumasi traders, along with the standard cocoa income. The town has banks, senior high schools and a hospital serving the surrounding villages.
Getting There
Duayaw Nkwanta sits on the main Sunyani–Kumasi road, about 30 km south-east of Sunyani and roughly two hours from Kumasi. Buses and trotros on that route pass through the town all day, making it one of the easiest districts in Ahafo to reach.
Sunyani has the nearest airport, with scheduled flights to Accra. Feeder roads from the highway to Bomaa, Terchire and Adrobaa are earth surfaced and slower, particularly between June and October.
