Geography
Nandom is the north-westernmost district in the Upper West Region. The Black Volta runs
along its western and northern side, forming the international boundary with Burkina Faso. The land is
flat Sudan savanna: sparse tree cover, one rainy season from May to October, and heavy Harmattan dust
from December. Compound farms are scattered across the countryside rather than clustered in villages.
Lawra adjoins the municipality to the south and
Lambussie Karni to the east.
Economy and Local Life
Farming is the main livelihood: millet, sorghum, maize, groundnuts, cowpea and bambara
beans in the rains, and dry-season vegetables in gardens along the Black Volta. Cattle, goats, sheep,
pigs and guinea fowl are kept in the compounds. Shea nut picking and butter making are common women’s
work. Nandom town holds the market, the municipal offices, a mission hospital and secondary schools.
The Kakube festival, held after harvest, brings people home from across Ghana.
Dagaare is spoken throughout, and Nandom’s Catholic mission and secondary schools have long given the district a strong schooling record for its size. Land is held and worked within the family compound. Many young people spend the dry season working in southern Ghana; the Kakube festival is timed for their return, and remittances show up in new roofing and school fees.
Getting There
Nandom sits at the northern end of the trunk road from Wa through Nadowli, Jirapa and
Lawra; the drive from the regional capital takes about two hours in the dry season. A road east links
Nandom to Hamile, the border post with Burkina Faso. Minibuses and shared taxis run daily from
Wa.
