Geography
Lawra lies in the far north-west of the Upper West Region, on the eastern bank of the
Black Volta. The river marks the international boundary with Burkina Faso; away from it the land is
flat savanna with laterite outcrops and seasonal streams. Babile, in the south of the municipality, is
the second main town. Nandom adjoins Lawra to the north,
Lambussie Karni to the east and Jirapa
to the south-east.
Economy and Local Life
Households farm millet, sorghum, maize, groundnuts, cowpea and bambara beans in the
single rainy season, and grow onions, tomatoes and other vegetables in dry-season gardens along the
Black Volta. Cattle, goats, sheep and guinea fowl are kept in most compounds. Shea nut collection and
butter processing bring in cash after harvest. Lawra town holds the main market and the municipal
offices, and the Kobine harvest festival each autumn is the municipality’s largest gathering.
Dagaare is the language of the municipality, and communities along the river also speak Birifor. Farming is organised around the family compound and its surrounding fields. Lawra sends a steady stream of young workers south between harvest and planting, and the return home for Kobine in late September fills the town. The border with Burkina Faso is porous to family visits and market trade.
Getting There
Lawra is on the paved trunk road running north from Wa through Nadowli and Jirapa, and
continuing north to Nandom and the Hamile crossing. Minibuses and shared taxis run daily from Wa
station. A river crossing at Kunyukuo links farming communities on the Black Volta.
