Geography
Akatsi North lies inland in the southern Volta Region, north of the Akatsi plains and away from the coast. The land is flat to gently undulating savanna with farm bush, and streams here are seasonal. Ave-Dakpa, the capital, sits on the road running north from Akatsi town.
Settlements are small and scattered, and most sit along feeder roads rather than on a trunk route. The district is one of the smaller ones in the region by population, and its communities are close enough together that people use Akatsi and Ave-Dakpa interchangeably for business.
It borders Akatsi South to the south, Ketu North to the east and Central Tongu to the west.
Economy and Local Life
The district is agricultural. Cassava, maize, groundnuts, cowpea, pepper and okra are the usual crops, and cassava is processed into gari for sale outside the district. Goats, sheep and poultry are kept at household scale.
Ave-Dakpa’s market serves the surrounding villages, while larger trade is done at Akatsi on the highway. Cloth weaving, palm oil pressing and petty trading fill out household incomes.
Ewe is the everyday language and English is used in schools and offices. The farming calendar opens with land clearing before the March rains and closes with harvest and gari processing after July. Market days at Ave-Dakpa and Akatsi organise the week, and funerals and church services take up the weekends.
Getting There
Ave-Dakpa is reached by turning north off the Accra–Aflao highway at Akatsi and driving a short distance inland. Accra to Akatsi takes about two and a half hours, with shared taxis covering the last stretch. From Ho, the road south through Kpetoe and Abor connects to the same route.
