Geography
Central Tongu lies in the lower Volta basin, inland from the coast and west of the Akatsi plains. The terrain is flat savanna grassland broken by the Volta River and its creeks, and the district floods in parts during the wet season. Adidome stands on the main road that runs north from Sogakope, which keeps it in daily contact with both halves of the district.
It borders North Tongu upstream, South Tongu downstream, and Akatsi South to the east.
Economy and Local Life
Households live mainly by farming and fishing. Cassava, maize, rice, vegetables and pepper are grown on the floodplain, and cattle and small ruminants are kept on the grassland. Fishing along the Volta and its creeks is a year-round trade, and the catch is smoked before it is sold on.
Adidome holds the district’s main market and its livestock trade. Gari processing, cloth weaving and transport work along the Sogakope road provide the other regular sources of cash.
Ewe is spoken throughout the district and English is used in schools and public offices. Farm work follows the rains from March, with harvest and gari processing through the second half of the year. Adidome’s market days set the weekly rhythm, and funerals, church services and school activity fill the weekends.
Getting There
From Accra, take the Aflao highway to Sogakope, cross the Volta bridge and turn north for Adidome; the trip takes about two hours. From Ho the same road runs south through Kpetoe and Adaklu country to Adidome. Minibuses and shared taxis serve the route through the day.
