Adentan is a municipal district in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. Its capital is
Adentan. The municipality had 237,546 people at the 2021 census, against 78,215 in 2010, one of the
fastest increases recorded anywhere in the region.
It is a residential district on Accra’s north-eastern edge, built up almost entirely since the
1990s. The name is also spelt Adenta, and both forms are in common use locally.

Geography
Adentan sits about 15 km north-east of central Accra, on the plain below the
Akuapem range. The municipality is compact and almost fully built up, laid out around the
Madina–Adentan highway that runs on towards Dodowa. Estates such as Ashaley Botwe, Ogbojo and
the Adentan housing scheme make up most of its area.
It adjoins Ga East to the west
and north-west, with Shai
Osudoku further out along the Dodowa road. Drainage runs south towards the Songo and Kpeshie
systems, and stormwater flooding on the highway is a long-running problem. The original Adentan
housing scheme, laid out by the state in the 1960s, is the core the later estates grew around.
Economy and Local Life
Adentan is a dormitory municipality. The great majority of working residents commute
into Accra, and the local economy is built on housing, retail, transport, private schools and
clinics. Land values are high and estate development remains the dominant business, with building
supply yards, hardware shops and estate agents on every main road.
Shops, banks and eateries line the highway between Madina and Adentan barrier, and the daily market
serves the surrounding estates. Street trading concentrates at the barrier and at the estate
junctions. There is very little farming left within the municipality; the last open plots have gone
to housing since 2010.
Getting There
The Madina–Adentan highway, an extension of the Accra–Aburi road,
is the main approach; the Motorway Extension and the Legon roads connect it to the rest of Accra. The
highway continues north-east to Dodowa and the Shai plains.
Trotros run from Madina, Circle and 37 stations through the day, and Adentan barrier is the main
lorry stop for onward travel to Dodowa. Kotoka International Airport is about 12 km south-west,
and peak-hour traffic on the highway can double the journey time.
