Geography
North Tongu occupies the Volta floodplain in the south-west of the region. The Volta River is the defining feature: it forms much of the district’s western edge and feeds the creeks and seasonal flood ponds that shape settlement here. Land close to the river is low, level and fertile, and communities such as Aveyime and Battor sit on or near its banks.
The district borders Central Tongu downstream and South Tongu further south along the same river system.
Economy and Local Life
Rice is the crop most associated with the district, grown on irrigated and flood-fed land in the Aveyime and Battor area. Farmers also grow cassava, maize, vegetables and sugarcane, and fishing on the Volta supplies both household food and the fish trade.
Battor is the administrative and service centre, and its hospital draws patients from well beyond the district. Riverside landing points double as trading spots, and smoked fish, gari and rice move from them to markets in Accra and Tema.
Ewe is the language of daily life, English the language of school and office. The farming year turns on the river: planting follows the rains from March, and fishing effort rises when water levels drop. Riverside communities keep canoes for both work and transport, and weekend funerals and church gatherings are the main social events.
Getting There
Battor is reached from the Accra–Aflao highway by turning north at Sogakope and following the river road, or from the Akosombo direction through Juapong. The drive from Accra takes about two hours in normal traffic. Shared taxis and minibuses run from Sogakope and Adidome to Battor daily.
