Geography
Asokore Mampong is a small, densely built municipality on the eastern side of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, carved out of the Kumasi metropolitan area. It is urban almost throughout: Asawase, Sepe Timpom, Aboabo and Asokore Mampong town run continuously into the city with little open land between them. It is surrounded by Kumasi to the west and south, Ejisu Juaben to the east and Kwabre to the north.
Economy and Local Life
There is little farming here. The municipality lives on trade, transport, artisanal manufacturing and services, and it holds some of Kumasi’s busiest low-income residential quarters. Asawase and Aboabo are long-established zongo communities with active street markets, tailoring, mechanic work and food trading. Many residents work in central Kumasi, at Kejetia and the Suame magazine workshops, and commute daily.
Asawase and Aboabo are among the oldest migrant quarters in Kumasi, so Hausa, Dagbani, Twi and other languages are all in daily use, and the Muslim community is large and long established. Housing is dense and much of it unplanned, which makes sanitation, drainage and flooding the standing local issues. Schools and clinics are stretched, and residents rely on central Kumasi for hospital care.
Getting There
The municipality adjoins central Kumasi and is reached in 15 to 20 minutes by city trotro or taxi from Kejetia. The Kumasi–Accra highway runs along its southern side, so long-distance traffic passes the municipality directly. Internal roads are tarred on the main routes and congested at peak hours. Kejetia lorry station in central Kumasi is the usual transfer point for anyone arriving from outside the region.
