Geography
Lambussie Karni lies in the far north of the Upper West Region, along the boundary with
Burkina Faso. Hamile, on the northern edge of the district, is the main road crossing into Burkina
Faso and the busiest trading point in the district. The land is flat Sudan savanna with thin tree
cover and seasonal streams. Karni and Lambussie are the two traditional centres.
Nandom and Lawra lie to the west,
Jirapa to the south-west and Sissala West
to the east.
Economy and Local Life
Households grow millet, sorghum, maize, groundnuts, cowpea and bambara beans, and keep
cattle, goats, sheep and guinea fowl. Shea nut collection and butter processing are standard
dry-season work. Cross-border trade through Hamile is the district’s distinctive activity: grain,
livestock, fuel and manufactured goods move in both directions, and the border market draws traders
from Burkina Faso. Both Sisaala and Dagaare are widely spoken here.
Sisaala is spoken around Lambussie and Karni, Dagaare towards Nandom and Lawra, and traders at Hamile use Moore and French as well. The near-flat population between 2010 and 2021 reflects steady out-migration to southern Ghana. Farmland is held within the family compound, and dry-season work away from home is a normal part of the household year.
Getting There
Lambussie is reached from Wa on the northern trunk road through Nadowli and Jirapa, then
by a branch road east of Lawra. Hamile is the terminus of the trunk road and the customs post for
Burkina Faso. Vehicles run daily from Wa; feeder roads within the district are unpaved.
