Geography
The district runs from the shoreline at Apam and Mumford inland to farming country. Effutu lies to the east, Gomoa East to the north-east and Ekumfi to the west along the coast. The coastal strip is low and sandy with lagoons behind the beach; further inland the ground rises into gentle wooded hills. Rainfall is light by southern Ghanaian standards, and the vegetation is coastal thicket and grass rather than closed forest. Small streams run south to the sea through the farm villages.
Economy and Local Life
Apam and Mumford are working fishing ports. Canoes go out for sardinella, anchovy and tuna, and the catch is smoked or salted for sale inland. Farming inland turns on cassava, maize, pepper, tomatoes and oil palm, with pineapple grown for the Accra market. Apam holds the main district market, and its colonial-era fort on the headland draws a steady trickle of visitors. Fish smoking, net mending and boat repair employ many households in the two ports, and traders from Accra and Kumasi buy at the landing beach on good days.
Getting There
Apam is about 14 km south of the Accra–Cape Coast highway; the turn-off is at Ankamu Junction. Accra is roughly two hours away by road, Cape Coast about an hour and a quarter. A coastal road links Apam eastwards to Mumford and on toward Winneba. Trotros serve Apam from Kaneshie in Accra and from Mankessim; smaller villages are reached by shared taxi from Apam station.
