Geography
Ekumfi runs along the Gulf of Guinea between Mfantsiman to the west and Gomoa West to the east, with Ajumako/Enyan/Essiam inland to the north. The coast is a line of fishing villages behind sandy beaches and small lagoons; inland the ground rises into low farmland. Rainfall is modest, in the dry coastal belt that runs east from Cape Coast. Streams draining to the sea are short and seasonal, and the beach is broken by rocky points between the fishing villages.
Economy and Local Life
Two things keep the district going: sea fishing from villages such as Nakwa, Aboano and Otuam, and farming inland. Pineapple is the district’s signature crop and is processed locally into juice, alongside cassava, maize, sugarcane and oil palm. Fish smoking, salt winning and petty trading support the coastal households, and Esakyir holds the district assembly. The fishing season peaks with the upwelling from July, and the lean months push many families into farming and trading. Otuam is the best known of the coastal towns.
Getting There
The Accra–Cape Coast highway passes just north of the district, and turn-offs near Mankessim lead down to Esakyir and the coastal villages. Mankessim is about 15 km west of the district, Cape Coast around 50 km, and Accra roughly two and a half hours by road. Shared taxis run from Mankessim station to Esakyir and on to the beach villages.
