Geography
The district lies along the south-western shoreline, a low coastal plain of lagoons, coconut groves and wetland behind the beach ridge. Nkroful, the capital, stands a few kilometres inland and is the birthplace of Kwame Nkrumah. Aiyinasi sits on the main Takoradi-Elubo highway and handles most of the passing trade. Ellembelle borders Jomoro to the west and Nzema East to the east. Esiama, Atuabo and Anwea sit close to the shore, while the northern villages lie in farm bush on the approach to the Ankasa forest block.
Economy and Local Life
Fishing, coconut, oil palm and cassava carry most households, and the beach villages smoke and trade fish inland. The gas processing plant at Atuabo takes associated gas from the offshore oilfields and has brought construction and service work to the coast. Aiyinasi holds the largest market in the district; Nzema is the everyday language.
Esiama and Aiyinasi sit on the main highway and take most of the passing trade, from fuel and food to transport. The lagoons behind the beach ridge support fishing and seasonal salt winning, and coconut groves run almost the length of the shoreline. Gas and oil work at Atuabo has brought wage employment, but farming and canoe fishing still support most households.
Getting There
Aiyinasi is about 85 km west of Takoradi on the highway towards Elubo, and Nkroful is a short drive inland from it. Trotros and shared taxis run all day between Takoradi, Aiyinasi and Esiama.
