Geography
The municipality runs along the shore between the Ankobra River and the Nzema hinterland, with rocky points and sandy bays either side of Axim. Fort Sao Antonio, begun by the Portuguese in the early sixteenth century, stands on the headland above Axim harbour. Inland the ground carries coconut groves, oil palm and secondary forest. Nzema East lies between Ellembelle to the west and Ahanta West to the east.
Economy and Local Life
Canoe fishing out of Axim and the smaller landing beaches is the main coastal livelihood, with fish smoking and trading built around it. Coconut, oil palm, cassava and rubber are the leading farm products, and small-scale gold winning works the Ankobra valley. Axim’s market and lorry park serve the surrounding villages, and its beaches draw weekend visitors from Takoradi.
Axim is one of the older trading towns on the Ghanaian coast, and the harbour, market and lorry park still work together as one economy. Coconut is processed for oil and copra, and cassava for gari. Offshore oil production west of the district has drawn some labour towards the service base at Takoradi, but fishing and farming remain the mainstay of the villages listed below.
Getting There
Axim is about 65 km west of Takoradi on the coastal highway towards Elubo, with a short spur south into the town. Trotros and shared taxis run frequently from Takoradi and from Aiyinasi.
