Geography
Obuasi Municipal lies in the south of the Ashanti Region, in hilly forest country on the gold-bearing Ashanti belt. The town itself is built along a narrow valley, with residential areas, mine infrastructure and older company estates packed close together, and farming villages spread on the surrounding slopes. It borders Adansi North to the north and east, Adansi South to the south and Amansie Central to the west.
Economy and Local Life
Obuasi is a mining town and has been for more than a century. Large-scale underground gold mining dominates, and much of the municipality’s employment, housing and services grew around it; small-scale and informal mining operates alongside. When mine activity slows, the effect on trade in the town is immediate. Farming continues in the outlying villages, mainly cocoa, oil palm, plantain and cassava, and the central market serves both the town and the surrounding districts.
The town is more mixed than most Ashanti districts: mining drew workers from across Ghana and beyond, so Twi shares the streets with Hausa, Fante, Dagbani and Ewe. Company-built housing, schools, the hospital and sports facilities shaped the town’s layout. Water pollution, land subsidence and the employment status of former mineworkers are the recurring local concerns, and youth unemployment rises whenever mining scales back.
Getting There
Obuasi is about 60 km south of Kumasi, roughly 90 minutes by road via Bekwai and Fomena. Buses and trotros run frequently from Kumasi, and the town is also reached from the Dunkwa and Central Region side. The old railway line to Obuasi is part of the wider network revival rather than a regular passenger service.
