Geography
Sekyere South lies north-east of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, on the gentle slope leading up to the Mampong scarp. Agona is the district capital; Jamasi, Bedomase, Asamang and Wiamoase are the other substantial towns, all strung along or just off the Kumasi–Mampong road. The land is forest and farmed savanna mosaic, cut by streams feeding the Owabi and Afram catchments. It borders Mampong to the north, Sekyere East to the east, Kwabre to the south-west and Afigya-Kwabre to the west.
Economy and Local Life
Food farming for the Kumasi market is the mainstay: maize, cassava, plantain, tomatoes, garden eggs and pepper move down the road daily. Cocoa and oil palm hold the wetter pockets, and poultry keeping is well established around Agona and Jamasi. Jamasi’s market is the busiest in the district. Roadside trading, transport and small agro-processing give most of the remaining employment.
Asante Twi is the everyday language, and the district sits inside the Asante traditional order with stools at Agona, Jamasi and Wiamoase. Agona holds the district assembly and hospital, and there are well-regarded senior high schools at Agona and Wiamoase. Because Kumasi is under an hour away, many households combine farming with trading or salaried work in the city.
Getting There
Agona is about 30 km north of Kumasi on the Kumasi–Mampong trunk road, which passes straight through the district. Trotros and buses run all day between Kumasi and Mampong and set down at Agona, Jamasi and Bedomase. Side roads to villages off the trunk are laterite and slower.
