Geography
Mampong Municipal sits on the Mampong scarp, the ridge that separates the forest belt of central Ashanti from the drier transition country to the north. The escarpment gives the town cooler nights and long views, and the road up it is a landmark on the run north from Kumasi.
The municipality lies about 55 km north of Kumasi. Neighbouring districts include Ejura Sekyedumase to the north, Sekyere Central to the east and Sekyere South to the south.
Economy and Local Life
Mampong is a farming and schooling town. Farmers grow maize, yam, cassava, plantain, vegetables and citrus, and the cooler scarp land suits tomatoes, garden eggs and pepper grown for the Kumasi market. Poultry and small livestock are kept widely.
Education is the other mainstay. Mampong has long been a centre for teacher training, senior high schools and health training, and the student population supports landlords, food sellers, printing shops and transport operators. The town market trades foodstuffs, cloth and household goods, and traders from Kumasi come up for farm produce.
Mampong is the seat of a senior Asante paramountcy, and chieftaincy affairs carry weight in the town. Asante Twi is the everyday language. The scarp climate is cooler than the Kumasi lowlands, and the municipality is known regionally as a schooling town as much as a farming one.
Getting There
Mampong is reached from Kumasi on the Kumasi–Ejura road, a drive of about an hour that climbs the scarp near Kofiase. From Accra, the route is the Accra–Kumasi highway and then north.
Buses and trotros run through the day between Mampong, Kumasi, Ejura and Nsuta. Shared taxis serve Kofiase, Aframso and the surrounding farming villages.
