Geography
Sene sits at the south-eastern corner of the Bono East Region, where the region meets Lake Volta. The lake wraps around much of the district area, and the drowned valleys of the Sene River and its tributaries form long inlets and island-studded shallows. Away from the water the country is flat savanna woodland with grass, shea and dawadawa trees. One long rainy season runs from about April to October.
Its regional neighbours include Sene East, which was carved from it, plus Atebubu-Amantin to the west and Pru to the north.
Economy and Local Life
Farming and fishing carry the local economy in roughly equal measure. Inland households grow yam, cassava, maize, groundnuts, cowpea and increasingly cashew, and keep cattle, sheep and goats. Along the shoreline, canoe crews fish the Volta and women smoke and trade the catch, which moves by road to Kumasi and Accra.
Kwame Danso is the administrative and market centre for the western half, with the district assembly, the main lorry station and the largest weekly market. Smaller lakeside settlements function as landing sites and buying points. Migrant fishing families, many of them Ewe, have settled along the shore for decades and live alongside the Akan and Guan host communities.
Getting There
Kwame Danso is reached by road from Atebubu, which sits on the Kumasi–Atebubu–Yeji route; the branch runs south-east from Atebubu to Kwame Danso and on towards the lake. From the regional capital Techiman the journey takes about three hours. Minibuses and shared taxis run daily from Atebubu and Kumasi, and boats link shoreline communities that road access reaches slowly.
