Geography
Jirapa lies in the north-west of the Upper West Region, on the trunk road between
Nadowli and Lawra. The land is open Guinea savanna, gently undulating, with seasonal streams running
west toward the Black Volta. Settlement follows the road and the compound-farm pattern typical of
Dagaaba country, with dispersed family compounds among their own fields.
Nadowli-Kaleo lies to the south, Lawra to the
north-west, and Lambussie Karni to the north-east.
Economy and Local Life
Farming supports most households: millet, sorghum, maize, groundnuts, cowpea, bambara
beans and yam, with cattle, goats, sheep, pigs and guinea fowl in the compounds. Shea nut picking and
butter processing are widespread dry-season work. Jirapa town carries the service economy — the
municipal administration, schools, a long-established mission hospital and a market that draws
traders from surrounding villages and from Lawra and Nadowli.
Dagaare is the language of the municipality and Dagaaba custom governs land, held and inherited within the family compound. The mission at Jirapa brought schools and a hospital early, and the town still draws students and patients from neighbouring districts. Many young people work in southern Ghana during the dry season and return for the planting rains.
Getting There
Jirapa sits on the paved trunk road running north from Wa through Nadowli, and on north
to Lawra, Nandom and the Hamile border crossing into Burkina Faso. Minibuses and shared taxis run
daily from Wa, and the drive takes about an hour and a half in the dry season. Outlying villages are
reached on unpaved feeder roads that soften badly between July and September.
