Geography
The municipality straddles the Ankobra River in the south-west of the region, on the forested ridges that carry the Ashanti gold belt south towards the coast. Prestea, Bogoso and Aboso all grew as mining settlements along that belt, and Huni Valley developed as a junction on the Takoradi-Kumasi railway. It borders Tarkwa Nsuaem to the south-east and Wassa Amenfi East to the north-west.
Economy and Local Life
Underground and surface gold mining has shaped the municipality for more than a century, and mine employment, haulage and small-scale winning still set the pace of local trade. Farming continues around the mining towns, mostly cocoa, oil palm, plantain and cassava. Prestea and Bogoso carry the largest markets, and land conflict between farms and concessions is a recurring subject at the district assembly.
Prestea has been worked for gold since the late nineteenth century, and the town’s layout still follows the shafts and company lines that grew with it. Aboso and Bogoso developed the same way. Around them, trading, transport, food selling and workshop trades serve a population that is far more urban than in the farming districts to the north. Huni Valley remains a rail point on the Takoradi line.
Getting There
Prestea is about 40 km north-west of Tarkwa by road, and Tarkwa is roughly 60 km inland from Takoradi. The Bogoso road continues north towards Dunkwa-on-Offin in the Central Region. Trotros and taxis link Prestea, Bogoso and Tarkwa through the day.
