Geography
The municipality lies in the north of the Western Region, in moist forest on the upper Ankobra and its tributaries. Ridges of the gold belt run through its southern edge towards Prestea. Wassa-Akropong stands on the road between Tarkwa and Dunkwa-on-Offin, which carries most through traffic. It borders Wassa Amenfi Central to the west and Prestea-Huni Valley to the south.
Economy and Local Life
Cocoa is the leading cash crop, sold through buying sheds in the larger villages, with oil palm, plantain, cassava and cocoyam grown alongside. Small-scale gold winning is widespread along the streams, and timber is cut from the remaining forest reserves. Wassa-Akropong holds the main market and the municipal offices.
Wassa-Akropong’s market is busiest in the cocoa season, when buying money circulates through the villages and lorries move beans south to Takoradi. Between crops, households press palm oil, process gari, burn charcoal or work on mining pits. The spread of alluvial winning along the streams is the sharpest local dispute, because it takes the same river flats used for dry-season farming.
Getting There
Wassa-Akropong is about 45 km north of Tarkwa by road, and Tarkwa is roughly 60 km from Takoradi. The road north continues to Dunkwa-on-Offin in the Central Region. Trotros run daily from Tarkwa and Takoradi.
