Gharbia Governorate

Gharbia Governorate (Arabic: محافظة الغربية Muḥāfaẓat al-Gharbiyya, IPA: [elɣɑɾˈbejjɑ, -jae], “the western governorate”) is one of Egypt’s governorates.

It is situated in the north of the country, south of Kafr El Sheikh and north of Monufia Governorate.

Tanta, its capital, is located 90 kilometers north of Cairo and 120 kilometers southeast of Alexandria. Gharbia’s major city is El Mahalla El Kubra. Gharbia governorate has a total size of 1,942 km2.

The governorate is divided into municipal divisions, with a total estimated population, as of January 2023, of 5,409,714. In some instances there is a markaz and a kism with the same name.
