Geography

Witzenberg lies on the eastern slope of the Skurweberg mountains, bounded by fold-mountain valleys — Ceres, the Warm Bokkeveld and Tulbagh basin. It borders Laingsburg and Breede Valley to the east, Drakenstein to the south, and Bergrivier and Cederberg to the west, with Hantam and Karoo Hoogland (Northern Cape) to the north.

History

Tulbagh, one of the oldest towns in the district, was founded in 1700 and largely rebuilt after a severe 1969 earthquake damaged much of its historic Cape Dutch main street, which has since been restored as a heritage precinct. Ceres grew later as a market town serving the fruit-farming valley named after it, and now anchors the municipality’s fruit-processing and cold-storage industry.

Getting There

The R43 and R46 link Ceres and Tulbagh to Worcester and Wolseley, and onward to the N1. Cape Town is about 150 km to the southwest via the Bainskloof or Michell’s Pass routes.
