Geography
The Mooi River, one of the Vaal’s tributaries, runs directly through Potchefstroom, giving the town its parks and open water frontage in the town centre.
JB Marks straddles the Mooi River valley in south-eastern North West, bordering City of Matlosana within Dr Kenneth Kaunda District and reaching north toward the Bojanala Platinum boundary near Koster. Ventersdorp, the smaller former municipality, sits on open highveld farmland north-west of Potchefstroom, some 60 km from the university town.

The Vaal River, which the Mooi feeds into downstream, also supports irrigated farming across much of the rural area between Potchefstroom and Ventersdorp.
Potchefstroom’s economy centres on North-West University and its large student population, alongside agriculture along the Mooi River and some light manufacturing. Ventersdorp remains a commercial farming town, with maize and cattle farming as the main rural industries and little of Potchefstroom’s institutional employment base.
Ikageng and Promosa, Potchefstroom’s largest townships, house much of the working population that supports the university, the town’s retail core and surrounding farms; Ventersdorp’s own township areas serve a smaller, farming-linked local economy with a very different rhythm from student-driven Potchefstroom.
Getting There
The N12 highway links Potchefstroom to Klerksdorp (about 60 km south-west) and Johannesburg (about 120 km north-east). The R501 connects Ventersdorp to Potchefstroom. OR Tambo International, near Johannesburg, is the nearest major airport.
Potchefstroom is also a well-known sporting town, home to the High Performance Centre used by national rugby and other elite sports squads, which brings a steady flow of teams and visitors independent of the university calendar.
