Geography
Greater Tzaneen straddles the Magoebaskloof escarpment, where mist-belt forestry gives way to the subtropical Letaba River valley below. Elevations range from cool, high-rainfall forest around Haenertsburg above 1,500 metres down to warm, frost-free valley floor near Letsitele. Within Mopani District it borders Greater Letaba and Maruleng.
Demographics
The population grew from 389,623 at the 2011 census to 478,254 in 2022, a rise of about 23%. Nkowakowa and Lenyenye townships hold the densest concentrations of residents outside Tzaneen town itself, and both continue to expand as workers move in for jobs on the surrounding fruit farms and in Tzaneen’s retail sector.
Economy and Local Life
Subtropical fruit farming is the backbone of the local economy — Tzaneen is a major hub for avocados, mangoes, macadamias and bananas, with Letsitele and Ofcolaco as key growing areas supplying both domestic markets and export packhouses. Forestry on the Magoebaskloof plantations supplies timber mills around Haenertsburg, and the same misty hills draw weekend tourism from Polokwane and Johannesburg. Tzaneen town itself serves as Mopani District’s main retail, banking and agri-processing centre.
Getting There
The R71 links Tzaneen to Polokwane in the west and Phalaborwa in the east, feeding traffic toward Kruger National Park’s Phalaborwa gate. Polokwane International Airport, about 90 km away, is the nearest scheduled airport.
History
Tzaneen town was founded in 1919, taking its name from a Sotho word for “gentle river.” The wider Greater Tzaneen municipality formed in the 2000 local government reorganisation, combining the town with the former Lebowa-administered areas around Nkowakowa, Lenyenye and Nwamitwa. The area’s fruit-farming industry dates to the early 20th century, when the mist-belt climate around Magoebaskloof was found ideal for citrus and later avocados.
