Geography
Makhuduthamaga sits in the hilly, semi-arid Sekhukhuneland heartland, drier and less industrialised than the platinum-mining ground further east in Sekhukhune District. It borders Elias Motsoaledi and Ephraim Mogale within the district.
Low hills and dry riverbeds cover much of the landscape between the scattered villages, with few perennial rivers to support large-scale irrigation of the kind seen in neighbouring Elias Motsoaledi and Ephraim Mogale. Rainfall is seasonal and unreliable, one reason livestock keeping and small dryland plots remain more common here than commercial cropping.
Demographics
The population rose from 274,880 in the 2011 census to 340,328 in 2022, one of the faster-growing municipalities in Sekhukhune District. Northern Sotho is the near-universal home language, spoken by 93.8% of residents, one of the highest single-language shares of any municipality in Limpopo, with only small pockets of other languages around Jane Furse’s hospital and government offices.
Economy and Local Life
Communal and small-scale farming remain the main rural livelihood across Makhuduthamaga’s many villages, with livestock grazing widespread on the drier land. Jane Furse serves as the municipality’s main trade and services centre, and many households depend on remittances from workers employed in Gauteng’s mines and cities.
With over 70 villages spread across the municipality, most under traditional Bapedi leadership, formal industry is limited compared to the platinum-mining areas further east in Sekhukhune District. Jane Furse hosts the main hospital, retail centre and government offices serving this rural population, and taxi routes linking the villages to Jane Furse and on to Burgersfort and Groblersdal are the backbone of local transport and trade.
History
Jane Furse grew up around a mission hospital established in the early 20th century and named after Jane Furse, wife of an Anglican bishop who supported the mission’s work. The wider Sekhukhuneland area takes its historical identity from the Marota (Bapedi) kingdom under successive Sekhukhune chiefs, whose 19th-century resistance to both Boer and British expansion is still commemorated across the district. Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality itself was constituted in its current form in 2000.
Getting There
Jane Furse is reached via the R579 from Burgersfort or the R37 from Groblersdal, roughly 200 km north-east of Pretoria. OR Tambo International Airport, about three hours away, is the nearest scheduled air link.
