Aganang Local Municipality was a local municipality in the Capricorn District of Limpopo province until August 2016, when its area was split between three neighbouring municipalities: Polokwane, Blouberg and Molemole. At the 2011 census, before the split, it had 131,164 people over 1,881 km². Its seat was Koloti.
What Aganang Covered
The name Aganang is Northern Sotho for “uplifting one another.” The municipality sat between Polokwane city and the Blouberg mountains, made up mostly of Northern Sotho-speaking rural wards under traditional authorities. Its main population centres included Moletji, Matlala and Maraba, alongside the administrative seat at Koloti. Like most of the surrounding district, Aganang’s economy rested on subsistence farming, cattle grazing and remittances from residents commuting to work in Polokwane, a pattern that continues in the areas that absorbed it. The African National Congress dominated local politics throughout the municipality’s existence, holding a large majority of council seats at its final election in 2011.
Where Its Towns Sit Today
Following the 2016 boundary redetermination, Aganang’s former wards were absorbed into three current municipalities. Moletji and the areas nearest Polokwane city now fall under Polokwane Local Municipality. Wards toward the Blouberg range were incorporated into Blouberg Local Municipality, and the remaining northern portion joined Molemole Local Municipality.
