Geography
Letsemeng occupies the driest, most sparsely settled corner of Xhariep, bordering the Northern Cape to the west and south along the Riet and Orange rivers. Terrain is flat to gently rolling Karoo-edge grassland, sitting at around 1,200–1,300 metres, drier and hotter than the rest of the Free State. The Riet River, dammed at Koffiefontein and again downstream, is the one reliable water source and supports the district’s only patch of irrigated farmland. It borders Kopanong to the east and Lejweleputswa district’s Tokologo municipality to the north, with the Northern Cape’s Magareng and Renosterberg municipalities across the Riet and Orange rivers to the west and south.

Afrikaans and Sesotho are the main home languages across the four towns, with each town holding a mixed farming and mining workforce rather than one dominant industry.

Sheep farming and irrigated agriculture along the Riet River dominate the local economy, with lucerne, wheat and table grapes grown on the irrigated blocks near Koffiefontein and Jacobsdal. Koffiefontein’s economy still turns partly on its diamond mine, one of only two working mines in the whole district; the town also hosts a well-known correctional facility, a significant local employer alongside the mine. Jacobsdal is known regionally for its vineyards and brandy distilling, a legacy of early Cape settler farming that makes it an outlier among the Free State’s mostly grain-and-livestock towns. Petrusburg and Luckhoff function mainly as trading points for surrounding stock farms, with weekly livestock auctions a fixture of the local economy.
Getting There
The R48 links Koffiefontein and Jacobsdal to Kimberley (about 100 km west) and Bloemfontein (about 130 km east) via the N8. Petrusburg sits directly on the N8 itself. Kimberley Airport, just over an hour’s drive, is the nearest airport with scheduled flights.
