Ridge. It borders Impendle, Mpofana, Msunduzi, Richmond, uMngeni and uMshwathi
within uMgungundlovu District Municipality. Smaller settlements including Thornville, Mid Illovo and Umlaas Road sit in

Mkhambathini took its Zulu name — “place of the acacia trees” — for the thorn-tree country
around Camperdown, and adopted it as the municipality’s official name after 2000, replacing the
older Camperdown/Vulindlela designation. The area’s position between Durban and Pietermaritzburg
made Cato Ridge an important rail and road junction from the colonial era onward, a role that
has grown with the N3 freeway and the warehousing it has attracted since the 1990s.
