History

KwaDukuza was the last capital of Zulu king Shaka, who was assassinated there in 1828; the modern town grew around a sugar mill established from the 1870s under the colonial name Stanger, after Natal surveyor-general William Stanger. The dual naming persists today — KwaDukuza is the official municipal and town name, with Stanger still in everyday local use. Ballito’s growth as a resort town from the 1950s onward has since eclipsed the historic centre in scale, and much of its recent commercial development dates from the 2000s onward as coastal property demand surged. Sugar milling around Stanger dates from the same era as Ballito’s early resort development, giving the municipality both an industrial and a tourism identity within iLembe District. The sugar mill at KwaDukuza remains one of the larger employers in the district outside the Ballito tourism belt, alongside the municipal offices and retail sector based in the town itself. Salt Rock and Shaka’s Rock, smaller settlements north of Ballito, retain a quieter residential character despite the broader coastal growth around them.

Getting There

The N2 and R102 run along the coast through KwaDukuza and Ballito, linking Durban to the south and Richards Bay to the north. King Shaka International Airport lies a short drive south of the municipality, making KwaDukuza the most air-accessible of the four iLembe municipalities. Long-distance coaches, minibus taxis and a growing number of shuttle services connect Ballito directly to the airport and Durban.
