Golden Gate Highlands National Park is a 340 km² national park in the eastern Free State, South Africa, near the Lesotho border. It is not a municipality — the park falls within Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality, in the foothills of the Maluti Mountains.
Location and Nearest Towns
The park sits about 17 km east of Clarens, the small tourist town most visitors use as a base, and is reachable via tar road through an eastern access gate near Phuthaditjhaba. Bethlehem, roughly 60 km to the northwest, is the nearest larger town with rail and bus connections. Both Clarens and Phuthaditjhaba lie within Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality.
What the Park Is
Golden Gate is known for its landscape rather than its wildlife — golden, ochre and orange sandstone cliffs, deeply eroded into outcrops and caves, the most famous being the Brandwag rock formation that gives the park its name. Numerous rock shelters in the park hold San rock paintings, some thousands of years old. The park hosts smaller wildlife than South Africa’s better-known reserves: eland, zebra, mongoose and grey rhebok among the mammals, alongside more than 210 recorded bird species, including the endangered bearded vulture.
Golden Gate is also a significant paleontological site — the oldest known dinosaur embryos, from the early sauropodomorph Massospondylus, were discovered in the park’s sandstone in 1978.
Geography
The park lies at altitudes between roughly 1,892 m and 2,838 m, straddling highland grassland and the steep sandstone ridges typical of the eastern Free State–Lesotho border zone. Its terrain and climate — cold, often snowy winters — set it apart from the flatter maize country that covers most of the rest of the province.
Getting There
Golden Gate is reached via the R712 from Clarens or the R711 from Phuthaditjhaba and Harrismith. Bloemfontein’s Bram Fischer International Airport, about 300 km away, is the nearest airport with scheduled flights; most visitors drive in from Johannesburg or Bloemfontein.
