Somerset East was founded in 1825 and named after Lord Charles Somerset, a Cape governor of the period. The town grew around a Dutch Reformed mission station and later became known for the Andrew Murray family of clergymen who worked there in the 19th century. Cookhouse developed as a railway junction on the Cape Town–East London line, and Pearston was laid out later in the century as a farming service town on the road between Somerset East and Graaff-Reinet.

The N10 runs through Cookhouse, linking the municipality south to Cradock and north toward Middelburg. Somerset East sits on the R63, connecting to Graaff-Reinet and, eastward, to Bedford and Adelaide. Gqeberha’s airport is roughly 150 km south of Somerset East.
Pearston lies further along the R400 west of Somerset East, roughly an hour’s drive, and is best reached via Somerset East rather than directly from Cookhouse.
Somerset East’s population is split between the older town centre and its surrounding township, which houses most farm and municipal workers.
