Ware County is the 60th county in Georgia. It was made on December 15, 1824, from land that was once part of Appling County.

Nicholas Ware, who was mayor of Augusta, Georgia, from 1819 to 1821 and a senator for Georgia from 1821 until his death in 1824, is honored by the name of the county.

The county has a total area of 908 square miles (2,350 km2), of which 892 square miles (2,310 km2) are land and 16 square miles (41 km2) (1.7%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
