Winner is the county seat.

The county was established in 1873 and incorporated in 1909.

It is named after Bartlett Tripp, a lawyer, judge, and diplomat.

Tripp County is located on South Dakota’s southern border.

It is bounded on the south by the Nebraska state line and on the north by the meandering White River.

The Keya Paha River flows east-southeast through the county’s lower reaches.

The terrain of the county is made up of rolling hills carved by gullies and drainages.

The county’s terrain slopes generally to the south and east, with the upper portion dropping northward into the White River valley.

The county’s highest point is located on the lower part of its west boundary line, at 2,552 feet (778 meters) above sea level.

The county covers 1,618 square miles (4,190 km2), of which 1,612 square miles (4,180 km2) are land and 5.1 square miles (13 km2) (0.3%) are water.
